Stephen Galvin - Guitar Teacher


Guitar Teacher Stephen Galvin is a multi-instrumentalist who teaches contemporary and jazz guitar, bass, singing and drums. Based in central Auckland, Stephen is a qualified, registered and experienced teacher.

He first played guitar aged eight and began teaching guitar with Chris Bayne in 1981 at the New Zealand Guitar Academy teaching courses in Bass, Lead and Rhythm Guitar. He established his own studio in 1984 and has taught thousands of Aucklanders to play guitar in many styles, including jazz, pop, rock, country, orchestral, classical, and church music. In addition to world jazz and classical guitar repertoire he has personally taught and played note-for-note transcriptions of guitar-players and musicians such as: Chet Baker, George Benson, Eric Clapton, Larry Coryell, The Doobie Brothers, Miles Davis, The Eagles, John Fogerty, Ben Harper, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler, the Nairobi Trio, Django Reinhardt, the Rolling Stones, Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Walsh, T Bone Walker, Neil Young, and many others.

Stephen has taught classical guitar and performed extensively in guitar recitals playing Bach, Tarrega, Tippett, and others. Some of his ex-students are now accomplished teachers themselves.
He has performed in outstanding musical theatre productions of West Side Story, Chess, The Pyjama Game, Rock Nativity, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chicago and others. He wrote two musicals for the stage and played several seasons with Gabrielle Blazer's Auckland Concert Orchestra. He has performed with many Auckland musicians including Richard Adams, Bruce Aitken, Phil Broadhurst, Grant Chilcott, Miguel Fuentes, Kara Gordon, Richard Ghent, Benedict Hagar, Jim Langabeer, David Lines, Stu Johnstone, Don McGlashan, Bruce Morley, Ken Naidu, Billy Nuku, Fernando Onate, Jason Orme, Mike Rutherford,  Peter Scholes, Steve Sheriff, Marie Steinway, Neil Stewart, Hattie St-John, Elena Stejko, Trevor Thwaites, (so many good musicians!) bands such as Clearlight, Crystal Silence, Gratis Kinetic, Neon Quaver, Opinion, Rewind, and Sounds of Motown in countless gigs and recording sessions spanning four decades. The beat goes on!

Stephen leads three bands; The Residentz, Parnazz and the Stevie G Band. He sings, plays guitar, drums and bass. Stephen manages ABC Studios in central Auckland for teaching, recording, rehearsals and performance. He also teaches singing, guitar, bass and drums in four Auckland secondary schools. Stephen Galvin holds a Performer's Diploma from Trinity College London, Bachelor of Music and Arts degrees, a Master of Music degree with First Class Honours, and a Diploma in Teaching from the University of Auckland.
